Only in New York City, the city that never sleeps, has a 1,000 person gala on a Monday night. The annual Great Sports Legends Dinner celebrated its 31st installment to benefit the Buoniconti Fund, the fundraising arm of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis brought out some of sport's biggest stars.
This year's honorees included Venus Williams, former NY Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, NY Jets Curtis Martin, legendary NY Knicks Willis Reed, Women's basketball star Cheryl Miller, Mr. Las Vegas Wayne Newton, race car driver Dario Franchitti, ice skating cutie Tara Lipinski, record-breaking swimmer Diana Nyad (swam from Havana to Key West), Show Biz producer James Nederlander, Mark Dalton, and Moon man astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
The night began with opening remarks by Marc Buoniconti , hosted by NBC Nightly News Lester Holtz and entertainment by the Broadway cast of On Your Feet. Guest included Christian and Brittany Slater, Christine Lynn, Dr. Barth Green, Miami Heat's Nick Arison, Jenna Green, Romero Britto, stylist Elyse Held, Carolyn Travis, lobbyist Ron Book, Michael and Michelle Berger, Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman, Nicole Lozano, Olympian Bob Beamon, Bal Harbour Shops Cheryl Stevenson and Gotmar Giron, Miami Heat player Justise Winslow, Polo star Nacho Figueras, Gloria and Emilio Estefan.
The night concluded with a moving speech by Nick Buoniconti and never ending confetti. Next year's event will be moving to another location while the Waldorf Astoria goes through renovations.
